He was still trailing Lotso when he noticed Doc Hamm's carriage frantically arrive in front of his office. This can't be good.
As he approached the carriage, he saw Hamm and Buzz trying to help...He couldn't quite see...Oh no...
It was Woody and Jessie. And they looked bad.
He was counting on getting Woody to help him take down Lotso. He knew he needed to help.
"Slink?" Buzz asked hopefully. "What are you doing here? I thought you were in Dodge."
"Not anymore. What happened?"
"It's a long story. Care to help?"
"Of course." Slink replied.
With Slink's help, they managed to get both Woody and Jessie into the doctor's office. In retrospect, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have a doctor's office on the second floor...
"I'm gonna need both of you to help." Hamm told them.
Slink and Buzz nodded.
Doc was about to start giving orders when Woody began to wake. Doc rushed to a nearby cabinet and grabbed a small jar and a needle.
Woody groaned in pain as he opened his eyes. "Where's Jessie?"
"She's right here," Doc says, "But she needs a cure."
"For what?" Woody, Buzz, and Slink ask almost in unison.
"Rabies. And she needs it fast. But-"
"'But' what, Doc? If she needs it, give it to her." Woody replied through his teeth.
"But," Doc continued as if he hadn't been interrupted., "This cure has never been tried before. In fact, I've been working on it for awhile. I think I've finally got it right, but-"
Woody's expression stopped Hamm in is tracks. "Doc, I know about rabies. I know that it kills and there's no cure. If you think you've got one, use it."
Doc nodded. "Alright, I need to get to work on the cure," He pauses to inject a needle into Woody's arm, "Buzz. Slink. You'll need to take care o' Woody's wounds. I'll guide you through it, but I need to concentrate."
"What'd you just do to me?" Woody asked as he began to fall asleep.
"It'll help with the pain."
Woody let out a weak chuckle. "What pain?" He asked as he drifted off to sleep.
Hamm looked to Buzz, "For now, just stop the bleeding."
Buzz nodded and got to work.
Slink didn't want to get in Buzz's way, so he watched the doctor.
Hamm retreated to his desk with the blood sample from Buzz, but, it didn't really look like blood anymore. It had separated. There were three layers, the bottom was red, the middle was white, and the top was a strange golden yellow. He notices that the strange-colored top layer is what Hamm needs.
"Slink, help me replace this splint." Buzz said.
Slink looked to Buzz and nods.
Hamm checks over Woody, assuring that his wounds have been properly taken care of. "Great work, fellas. If I ever need help in the future, I know who to ask."
"If you hadn't told us what to do, we'd have been lost." Slink says with a weak chuckle.
Woody has woken up since they finished bandaging him. "What about that cure for Jessie?"
"I've got it right here." Hamm replies as he holds up a needle.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Woody asks rather impatiently.
"I was waiting for help. I'm not sure what to expect."
Buzz and Slink stand on either side of Jessie's bed. Woody grabs his crutches and begins to stand.
"What are you doing? You need to rest." Hamm tells him.
Woody glares at him. "I'm gonna be there, just in case you need more help."
Hamm sighs but doesn't protest. By now he knows it would be useless. Woody hobbles himself over to a chair right next to Jessie.
"Alright, everyone cross your fingers..." Hamm says as he injects the cure into Jessie's arm. Heavy bleeding, he was expecting that. He tightly holds a towel on the injection sight.
"Wait, what's that needle for, doc?" Woody asks.
"Epi-whatty?" Buzz asks.
"It's a fancy name for adrenaline."
"Why do ya need that?" Slink asks.
Before Hamm can respond, Jessie begins hyperventilating. Her whole body begins to shake.
After checking her pulse, Hamm plunges the second needle into Jessie's thigh.
"That's why." Hamm responds as Jessie begins to calm down. "Woody, grab that pillow behind you and put it under her head."
Woody does as he's told. "Did the cure work, doc?"
"I can't be sure. I'll have to run a few tests, but I'm pretty confident."
"She's still not breathing normal..." Woody comments.
"It'll take a few minutes before she's completely back to normal." Hamm replies as he begins examining her.
Hamm draws a blood sample, checks her reflexes, then runs a few tests on the blood.
"Well...What d'ya think, doc? Will she be alright?" Woody asks.
"I think she'll be just fine. I still want to keep her here for observation, just to be sure. If all goes right, we may have developed the cure for rabies." Hamm says smiling wide.
Realizing that Jessie will be okay, Slink tries to get everyone back on track. "So...About Lotso..."
"Lotso? That traveler?" Buzz asks.
Woody sighs. "He's more than that. What do you know about it, Slink?"
"Well, I know that he's got the whole town laced with dynamite-"
"What?!" Buzz shouts.
Woody nods. "What else?"
"He plans on blowing it up this afternoon. I don't know exactly when, he's going to call a meeting."
Woody thought for a time. "I think I know just the person to talk to."
